When I first heard of the third eye, I thought it was some voodoo, pseudoscience, nonsense.
But after researching experts and even putting myself through some experiments, turns out I was pretty wrong.
The ‘third eye’ was first discovered thousands of years ago as part of the ancient chakra system.
We now know that the third eye chakra is an ancient reference to the pineal glad and hypothalamus (or pituitary gland).
The third eye is thought to provide perception beyond normal sight. A sixth sense or ‘gut feeling’ if you will.
This makes sense, as the pituitary gland located in the hypothalamus region of the brain (between your eyes) controls information processing and calculates reaction in the endocrine system and the nervous system.
Basically, the third eye helps us assess all incoming information from our senses and weigh that information with how the body should respond.
The Third Eye Chakra and The Human Endocrine System
Chakra is a Sanskrit word that translates to “wheel,” “circle,” or “disk,” also sometimes the “wheel of life.”
The ancient chakra locations directly align with Endocrine glands and nerve clusters called plexuses.
Chakras’s although commonly disregarded as “woo woo” or “spiritual nonsense”, are actually an ancient metaphor for our scientifically proven Endocrine System and Nervous System.
The third eye specifically represents the pineal gland and the pituitary gland which is the control center for both the endocrine and nervous systems
How Do Chakra’s Work ?
Chakras represent locations of of nerve clusters (Nervous System) and hormone releasing glands (Endocrine System).
Our nerve plexuses and glands effect different parts of the body and regulate different hormones which affect our brain chemistry and emotional state of being.
The endocrine system is made up of several hormone-producing glands that act as chemical messengers.
By altering hormone levels, the endocrine system works to keep the body in optimal health and in a balanced mood.
Chakras can have different levels of activity.
Some chakras are often not “open” enough (glands not producing enough hormones) while other chakras others are overactive (glands producing too much hormones).
This delicate balance of hormone production is what keeps our bodies physically and mentally balanced.
Or as the ancients used to say “chakras in alignment”
Those who have practiced deep meditation or have done yoga understand that these practices are ancient techniques to stretch out our physical bodies, in ways which stimulate our endocrine and nervous systems.
The ‘Third Eye’: Pineal Gland vs. Pituitary Gland
The third eye is commonly associated with your pineal gland and pituitary gland.
Both glands are located deep inside your brain in the middle of your forehead.
These glands are important because they control everything you do, whether you’re aware of it or not.
The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland encased in the bone near the brain’s center. It takes the shape of a small pine cone, hence its name.
The pineal gland is responsible for regulating your melatonin production and your sleep-wake cycle AKA yoru circadian rhythm.
The pituitary gland is the ‘main hub’ located in the hypothalamus region of the brain and it controls both your endocrine systems and your nervous system.
It senses your body’s needs (often subconsciously) and it secretes different hormones into your bloodstream which act as “messengers” which carry information all the way from the pituitary gland to distant cells all over yoru body, managing and regulating their activity.
Third Eye Chakra: The Pineal Gland Explained
Over the years and through many different research projects, scientists have found that the pineal is a light-responsive gland that secretes melatonin.
This hormone controls our reproductive hormones and body natural rhythms like yoru sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin also influences our stress levels and adaptability to a changing world.
The pineal gland is a real-time regulator, controlling our sleep cycles and sexual maturity.
4 Common Third Eye (Pineal Gland) Facts vs. Myths
- The pineal gland secrets a neuro-chemical called DMT (Dimethyl-tryptamine).The pineal gland usually releases DMT, also known as the “spirit molecule,” during birth and death. This component induces a profound ‘psychedelic‘ or spiritual or mystical experience as well as dreams.
It’s been proven that the human pineal gland does produce DMT, but how much it actually produces is currently debated.
Researchers now believe that the pineal gland does produce DMT, but also controls DMT production and release in other parts of the body as well.
- It’s Photosensitive
This is true. The pineal gland has photoreceptors that are sensitive to various forms and intensities of light. Researchers in 2019 found that sunlight was the most important factor when it comes to pineal gland activation and melatonin production.
- The Pineal gland has retinal tissues.
Amazingly, this is also true. The human’s third eye or pineal gland has retinal tissues, including cones and rods within its structure, just like the regular eye.
I’m blown away by this!!!
But doctors have confirmed this as true in a 2012 study by Pennsylvania University. These tissues help in absorbing light, which the optic nerves translates into vision.
- The pineal gland is sensitive to sound frequency
The jury is still out on this one.
The pineal gland has tiny calcium carbonate crystals floating inside it. These crystals are sensitive to both pressure and frequency variations (AKA sound and vibrations).
Early studies have found that using frequencies to effect the pineal gland are “CLEARLY POSSIBLE” but more studies are needed.
Also, ancient cultures such as the Egyptians,Mayans, and Greeks used music as a medicine further illustrating the use of different frequencies to affect internal human functions.
Third Eye Chakra: The Pituitary Gland Explained
When it comes to the third eye, the pineal gland gets talked about the most, but it’s the pituitary gland that does all the work.
Located in the hypothalamus region of the brain, the pituitary gland is the control center for regulating our natural state of being and coordinating between the endocrine glands and the nervous system.
The pituitary gland is called the “master gland” because it controls the regulation of all the other glands as well as the nervous system.
Can You Consciously Activate Your Third Eye Glands
The third eye has a divine side that science has not yet 100% captured.
It connects a deeper awareness to reality, to the universe, and to truth then we are consciously aware of.
By exercising your third eye, you might feel a higher level of conscious awareness to yoru environment and self-awareness.
In particular, here’s what effects exercising your third may have.
- Picturing specific things in your mind or dream before they happen
The third eye chakra (pineal & pituitary glands) empower your visualization skills and allows you to hold a clear perspective of your place in the universe. basically you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your effect on the environment around you.
- Feeling like you are transforming on a fundamental level
Although you may not explain it yourself, it’s common for the third eye to open due to transformational experiences or before a period of tremendous growth.
You become more aware of your surroundings and direction in life.
It creates an energy upgrade through your system, allowing you to tap into new realms of awareness, insights, perception, and motivation.
- You start to notice colors getting brighter and the environment sharper.
The pineal gland associates with light, so it allows us to take in light and details you would miss otherwise.
How to Consciously Activate Your 3rd Eye Glands
There’s no “magic bullet” to activating your glands.
But there are ways you can improve their function to keep your body functioning physically and mentally at the highest level.
1. Healthier Diet Modifications
Pineal Gland: According to the team of Advanced Staff nurses, foods that are packed with vitamins B5 and B6 help to regulate the pineal gland.
Generally speaking these would be foods like cereals, fish, avocados, and beans.
Pituitary Gland: The small-but-mighty ‘control center’ runs primarily on vitamins D and E.
Generally speaking these would be foods like high-protein meats, fish, eggs, and nuts.
The pituitary gland craves manganese for added support, which would include shellfish, leafy greens, and wheat.
2. Harness Cognitive And Emotional Tools Like Meditation
Visualization and meditation can help balance your third eye chakra (balance pituitary gland secretion). Managing your emotions and your moods can have a huge impact on your hormone secretion.
Meditation can balance hormones which ease the burden on the third eye chakra. It can be as simple as staying still in silence or humming to connect with yourself.
3. Practice Physical Movements That Target Your Third Eye Region
Yoga is a great tool for practicing physical movements that get your bodies energy flowing and blood flowing through your body is different ways that relieve stress and improve quality of life.
For thousands of years yoga has been passed down as a way of connecting your healthy mind with your physical body.
A study published in 2011 found that yoga was designed to exercise each and every muscle, nerve and gland throughout the body
4. Stay Open-Minded
Open-mindedness connects to perception, wisdom, and guidance that help us realize personal growth.
You can diversify your perception through day-to-day activities like learning a new culture, reading various literature, or listening to a new music genre.
5. Use Aromatherapy
Essential oils like frankincense, lavender, sandalwood, myrrh, parsley, rosemary, and pine can help activate areas of the brain long forgotten about.
You can burn them in a diffuser, inhale directly, or add to your body oil and bathing water.
6. Sun Gazing
I used to do this a lot as a kid. Maybe you have too ?
Just close your eyes and direct your forehead towards the sun. The feeling is strange, enlightening, and euphoric all at once.
Turns out it’s actually good for you.
Light is the pineal gland’s element, so any light-filled environment can help awaken and realign your third eye. It includes gazing gently at the sun during sunrise and at sunset.
This also coincides with vitamin D that your pituitary gland feeds of off.
As it turns out the third eye is a lot less mystical than I thought. Although there’s is still plenty more to find out, the third eye’s connection to the pineal and pituitary glands make a whole lot of sense.
Although we all have a third eye chakra (glands), a lot of us ignore the signals it send our bodies and live based on emotional bias and fear instead of listening to our inner self to find a deeper understanding for what is true.
But if we tune into our bodies inner frequencies with the help of inner stress relief, diet modification, yoga, and other methods, we can utilize our third eye senses much more than most of us currently do.
This way, we’ll get an intimate connection with our own self-awareness and a step closer to evolving our consciousness to a higher level.
How much better would our lives be if we could always access our inner-infinite wisdom with a snap of a finger?
