You ever listen to binaural beats?

I used to manage multi-million dollar projects with binaural beasts on my Pandora playlist.  And I didn’t realize at the time, but the binaural beats that I listened to daily may have given me a major advantage.

If you’ve not familiar, binaural beats are instrumentals that are tuned to a certain frequencies in order to activate different parts of your brain.

For example, may people listen to rain, or beach sounds for falling asleep. There are both some basic examples of typical binaural beats.

In essence, binaural beats are believed to improve cognitive function, making listeners brains better at processing, learning, and retaining new information, while also improving mood and decreasing stress and anxiety.

But is it true ?

Here’s everything we found out about binaural beats the the effects of sound frequencies on our brains.

What Are Binaural Beats?

You’ll often hear of binaural beats being referred to as an “auditory illusion.”

This is because listening to a binaural beat is essentially listening to two different frequencies, which your brain then processes and synchronizes into one.

Let’s take a look at an example of this in action:

Supposed you’re listening to a sound in your right ear at a frequency of 125 Hertz. And in your left ear, you’re listening to a sound with a frequency of 150 Hertz.

As your brain processes these two different frequencies, it will eventually synchronize its waves to the difference between the two different frequencies.

So, rather than hearing one frequency at 125 Hz and another at 150 Hz, your brain will only hear the difference, which is a single rhythm with a frequency of 25 Hz.

This is a binaural beat.

You can find binaural beats for all sorts of human emotions. When I’m working or studying I like the ‘deep focus’ beats at 432 hertz.

When I’m meditating I like the “super Intelligence” 14 hertz beats.

And when I’m exercising sometime I throw on the adrenaline binaural beat at 20 hertz.

Some binaural beats are musical, and some are more tonal that your brain ‘dials into’.

You should definitely check out a few different types after reading this article.

How Do Binaural Beats Work?

For the effect of a binaural beat to take place, both audible tones must have a frequency of no more than 1,000 Hz, and they must be listened to separately, one in each ear.

Everything on earth is effected by gravity.

Stay with us here, but as Albert Einstein proved, gravity moves in waves, just like sound does.

In fact sound waves are actually anti-gravity, and the right frequencies can produce mind and body altering effects.

When a person listens to a binaural beat, the sound wave frequency of the beat signals to neurons in the brain which may effect everything from mood to health.

According to research, binaural beats have the effect of improving both your working memory and long-term memory.

The effect of binaural beats is also said to help strengthen and improve existing connections in the brain, suggesting that a binaural beat may improve an individual’s attention span

Although binaural beats are nothing new and have often been used to help tune musical instruments, it’s only recently that researchers have begun studying the potential cognitive and health benefits they may offer.

6 Health Benefits Of Binaural Beats

For thousands of years, meditation has been used as a tool to help improve mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical well being.

Binaural beats are said to have many of the same health benefits on the human mind as meditation.

This includes:

  1. Decreased stress levels and reduced anxiety
  2. Increased vascular and mental relaxation
  3. Improved mood and positivity
  4. Increased concentration and mental focus
  5. Increased creativity
  6. Reduction/relief of bodily discomfort and pain

Do Binaural Beats Help With Studying?

Among the many health benefits of binaural beats, they can improve relaxation, concentration, focus, and mental clarity, which may enhance your ability to study and retain new information.

That said, binaural beats listened to at different frequency levels can have other effects.

For instance, binaural beats within the 4 Hz to 8 Hz range are linked to effects on the brain’s theta waves, which affect anxiety levels, relaxation, REM sleep, and creative and meditative states.

Therefore, if you’re trying to develop new ideas while studying, binaural beats within this range will be your best option.

But it’s lower beta frequencies, which are between 14 Hz to 30 Hz, that are the ones linked to increased problem-solving abilities, increased focus and concentration, and improved short and long-term memory.

When I used to work as a project manager I would focus for hours straight (with-out looking at my phone) just ‘tuned in’ to my work at hand. I also found that when it came to recalling information later on, I would remember even the slightest contract details.

So if you plan on improving your ability to study, you’ll need to find a binaural beat with a frequency anywhere in this range.

How To Use Binaural Beats For Studying

If you’re heavily distracted, listening to binaural beats likely won’t have much of an effect on your ability to study.

But then again, you probably shouldn’t be studying at a tractor pull competition.

For maximum effect, it’s recommend to find a calm place free of outside distractions, where you can sit and listen to your beats and study simultaneously.

To get started, you might want to listen to a binaural beat from anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes before studying, which will ensure that your brain will fully entrain the frequency.

In other words, this period gives your brain time to fall into synchronization with the binaural beat.

Then you can simply study, read your notes, or research as you usually would.

The effects of listening to binaural beats while studying may not be apparent instantly, but then again you might find yourself deep with-in focus for hours longer than you planned with a deeper understanding of yoru subject than you expected.

When it comes to writing your next test or recalling any of the information you’ve studied, you’ll likely notice that you won’t have to “dig” as deep to find the answers.

Your brain will naturally sort through the information you took in due to the effects of the improved neuronal connections while you were learning and studying the information.

Additionally, we recommend that you try experimenting with the length of time you spend listening to the beats to figure out what works best for you.

Also, try different beats at similar and different frequencies.

There are thousands of different binaural beats tuned tot he same frequencies.

Binaural Beats, Meditation, And Sleeping

Meditation and proper sleep can also significantly impact your ability to learn and retain new information.

Fortunately, binaural beats with a delta frequency of between 1 Hz and 4 Hz are linked with deeper sleep and increased relaxation.

As mentioned above, if you’re stressed out about an upcoming test or job meeting try listening to a relaxing binaural beat to snap out of your mindset.

This actually works quite well if you’re having a bad mental day.

Binaural Beats, Stress, And Anxiety

On a similar note, alpha frequencies, or those with a frequency of anywhere between 8 Hz to 13 Hz, are believed to help decrease mental anxiety, promote positivity and a better mood, and encourage relaxation.

And, truth be told, whether binaural beats genuinely help you study or not, the fact that you’ll be less stressed and less anxious about studying will already increase your chances of being able to learn and retain new information.

Are Binaural Beats Safe To Listen To?

There’s nothing dangerous or harmful about binaural beats.

However, individuals in certain situations or with specific conditions should avoid listening to them, which includes:

  • Individuals suffering from seizures or epilepsy since binaural beats may increase the risk of a seizure due to brain wave functionality changes.
  • Individuals who are being prescribed tranquilizers or those who have psychological disorders like schizophrenia or personality disorders.
  • Individuals with cardiac conditions or those who have a pacemaker since changes in brain waves can affect heart rhythms, potentially leading to more severe conditions.
  • Women who are pregnant should not listen to binaural beats since this can increase their chances of labor.
  • Young children should also avoid listening to binaural beats as doing so can increase their risk of having a seizure.

Additionally, you should never listen to binaural beats while driving or operating machinery since the rhythms may put you into a trance, which puts those around you and your personal safety, health, and well-being at risk.

What happens if you listen to binaural beats for too long?

According to our research, there are virtually no known side-effects of listening to binaural beats.

That said, you should never listen to binaural beats at high volumes, where you risk causing damage to your hearing.

Both short and long-term exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels has been known to cause hearing loss.

Eighty-five decibels are roughly the same volume level as being next to a roadway with heavy traffic.

Conclusion: Will Binaural Beats Improve Your Ability To Study?

Binaural beats can improve your cognitive ability, making it easier for your brain to concentrate.

When you listen to binaural beats at a frequency of between 14 Hz to 30 Hz, you’ll be more receptive to learning, understanding, processing, and retaining the information you study.

Listening to certain frequencies can help decrease your stress and anxiety levels while also improving your focus, concentration, and mental clarity, which can give you the upper hand when crunching for that next big test!
